People First of California, Inc. (PFCA) is alive and well!!

PFCA would like to stop the gossip that is not true.

Believe the truth:

Truth 1: The State Council of Developmental Disabilities informed PFCA on July 1st that they would no longer be funding us after September 30, 2011.

Truth 2: PFCA has been around for over 20 years as a non-profit grassroots movement.PFCA has had other grants through out the years. Not having this grant will not stop us being your strong statewide self-advocacy organization.

Truth 3: PFCA is already your statewide self-advocacy organization where you the members are the voice—ran by and for people with developmental disabilities to decide what and where their movement goes.

Please click here to read our Empowerment Statement to learn more!

Truth 4: PFCA is already planning their 2012 People First Statewide Convention and will announce more information on this website and through mailings in the near future.

Truth 5: PFCAwill continue to support People First in local communities throughout the state; PFCA is here for you.

Truth 6: PFCA is known by its LOGO. All PFCA materials and events will have this on it.

If you have any questions please call the Interim Board President, Roy Rocha at the People First of California office 916-552-6625 or email us at info@peoplefirstca.org.

"WE ARE PEOPLE FIRST, OUR DISABILITY IS SECOND!"

PEOPLE FIRST FEELS:
If you see us as equal, but different and do not include us in the decisions that affect our lives you will see us as your disabled client.

PEOPLE FIRST BELIEVES:
If you get out of our way and we have the opportunity to gather power and knowledge over OUR own lives we will become strong and successful.

PEOPLE FIRST IS

People First is an organization of People with developmental disabilities who are learning to work together on how to find their voice.

Using different tools such as peer mentoring, we discover our true identity by living, working, and making new friendships.

We embrace our rights and responsibilities that we meet each and every day when making decisions. These challenges strengthen our commitment to educate our neighbors on who we are.

People First is run BY and is FOR people with developmental disabilities

We learn:

  • To find our voices
  • To stand up for ourselves and our peers
  • Leadership skills
  • To run our own meetings
  • Our identity and history
  • To make system wide changes
  • To be involved in our local neighborhoods
  • How to make friends
  • To organize chapter functions and conventions
  • How the political system works
  • Respect and kindness for each other
